Network for Water and Sanitation collaborates closely with the ministries of health at national and county levels to support the government’s national initiative to scale up sanitation coverage and end open defecation in Kenya. The program supports Total Sanitation and Sanitation Marketing (TSSM)—an approach that combines sanitation marketing and activities that foster an enabling environment for improved sanitation and hygiene at scale.
At the health facility level, activities target the functionality of the oral rehydration therapy (ORT) corners by integrating sanitation and hygiene education and messaging for mothers attending maternal health clinics. Integration of hygiene and sanitation is also supported through large-scale community outreach activities.
In small towns, NEWAS will focus on promoting safe disposal and treatment of fecal sludge and exploring options for safe re-use of human waste in agricultural or agro-processing applications (for fertilizer, energy, etc.). NEWAS also provides various types of technical assistance to bolster pro-poor sanitation value chains capable of growing in response to demand.
- Implementing Community Led Total Sanitation approaches in over 1,000 villages.
- Promoting appropriate low-cost sanitation approaches and technologies for adoption.
- Prioritizing needs/gaps that impede household adoption of improved sanitation, based on results of the household baseline survey and WASH enterprise survey undertaken in Year 1.
- Providing business development services for sanitation services and products.
- Supporting the re-establishment of community health structures that are not functional (e.g. mother support groups and Community Units)
The main activities the WASH team is involved with and aims to be involved are:
- Participation and organization of webinars that discuss WASH related topics
- Participation in global events and give a voice to young water professionals
- Engaging in global debates about SDG 6
